VMware Horizon Cloud Next-Gen

Updated: Aug 8, 2024

A modern, hybrid DaaS architecture on Microsoft Azure

The rise in remote work has compelled organizations to rethink the technologies they provide to employees for secure access to corporate resources. To ensure seamless access to desktops and apps while maintaining a consistent experience, enterprises have turned to virtualized solutions. As cloud adoption grows, cost optimization and scalability become increasingly important.

VMware HorizonĀ® Cloud next-gen offers a new desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) architecture designed for todayā€™s remote workforce. This modern, cloud-native, hybrid, and multi-cloud desktop and app virtualization platform is built on core principles including:

  • Lowering costs

  • Increasing scalability

  • API-based management

  • Enhanced visibility, scalability, and troubleshooting

Cost reduction through "thin edge" architecture

To minimize the management footprint and provide a genuine desktop virtualization service, Horizon Cloud next-gen utilizes a "thin edge" architecture. Components typically deployed in customer environments, such as pod managers and databases, are shifted to the VMware-managed Horizon Control Plane. This new setup, known as the Horizon Edge, decreases the footprint within customer environments, resulting in increased scalability, reduced management, simplified updates, improved stability, and infrastructure cost savings of up to 78 percent.

Unprecedented Scalability

Part of the cost reduction comes from enhanced scalability in the cloud. Previously, pod-based environments could support up to 2,000 users per Azure subscription before requiring additional capacity and thus more pods. The new Horizon Edge can support 5,000 users per Azure subscription. Expanding capacity is as simple as adding another Azure subscription, with each Horizon Edge capable of supporting up to four subscriptions, or 20,000 users. For even more capacity, simply deploy a new Horizon Edge. All Horizon Edges, whether distributed globally or within the same Azure region, utilize the same Horizon Control Plane and are managed as a single environment.

Enhanced Visibility and Proactive Troubleshooting

SaaS is central to Horizon Cloud next-gen, providing advanced visibility and troubleshooting capabilities. This enables VMware to identify and resolve issues before they impact your environment, simplifying daily operations and increasing stability. If an issue affecting performance or user experience does occur, Horizon Cloud next-gen offers advanced alerting and reporting features to ensure timely updates and swift resolution.

Additionally, Horizon Cloud next-gen integrates with VMware Workspace ONEĀ®, offering support for Workspace ONE Intelligence, which provides dashboards and customized reports.

Advanced Automation with API-Driven Architecture

Horizon Cloud next-gen is designed entirely around APIs, allowing all management interface functions to be accessed via these APIs. This API architecture facilitates integration with third-party ticketing or monitoring solutions, partner-developed managed service offerings, and customer-created integrations and automation that utilize existing workflows.
